Great Resources to Share with my New Team

Let's start with James Nottingham!

The Learning Challenge

The Learning Challenge with James Nottingham from Challenging Learning on Vimeo.
The Learning Challenge is one way to explain why more challenge leads to enhanced learning. It helps teachers structure lessons, and students challenge themselves. Created by James Nottingham (@JamesNottinghm), the Learning Challenge uses the idea of a "pit," first used by Butler & Edwards. More background information, a full description, & lesson resources can be found in Challenging Learning (2010).

The Teaching Target Model with James Nottingham from Challenging Learning on Vimeo.
This is about targeting our teaching so that students are more Students need to be willing and able to get into The Learning Zone or 'wobble zone'. They should be 'wobbling' at periods in their learning journey so that they continue to make PROGRESS. As teachers, we need to learn to target our teaching towards this objective.

Planning the Year Ahead

A quick look at the year ahead:

Shopping, shopping, shopping...

Just one of the many reasons we are heading off is to say farewell to our mortgage. So just how much are we going to be able to save? Given shopping is considered a sport in Saudi, with some of my favourite stores (which are not in NZ), this could be easier said than done.

Unbelievably water is more expensive than petrol in Riyadh. A litre of petrol costing just 20c

I found looking at this brochure quite insightful (remember everything is in Saudi Arabian Riyal, so divide price by 2.5 for a rough NZ dollar equivalent:  Tamimi Brochure

One thing I am looking forward to is exploring the markets and there look to be quite a few. I am not a haggler by nature, so bartering will be a new skill to develop.

Shopping in Kingdom Tower will be at the other end of the shopping spectrum. There is a floor that is family friendly, that is where Peter and I can shop together. Then there is a floor called Ladies Kingdom where unfortunately (hehe) Peter is not allowed. I may need to stay away from the Gallery though.

As you can see  the selection of shops is amazing:

Romaizan Compound - Our New Community

We will soon be joining the Romaizan Compound Community.

Like all things we have Googled, there are certainly mixed reviews on the facilities. We have decided to go with an open mind and find out for ourselves. We are lucky in that we will live in a 3 bedroom fully furnished villa, so we only need to pack our clothes.

Image

The compound has around 200 villas, 3 pools, 4 tennis courts, 2 squash courts, a day-care centre, grocery store, gymnasium, dance studio, shopping bus, restaurant and a bar. There are around 1000 people living in the compound so I am really looking forward to making lots of friends.

And the Google Earth view!

Visas and Medicals - A Few Tips

Not an exciting post but hopefully helpful if you are thinking about coming over...

Our first little surprise was the cost of the tests needed for our medical! One of the joys of the NZ health system is that these costs are usually covered, therefore quite invisible... not so when you are needing them for employment purposes. There is quite a list of conditions they want to know about- $504 worth in fact. One of the tests needs a sample taken between 12pm and 3pm for 3 consecutive days. Not knowing this I started the process on a Friday, only to find out I couldn't drop off the samples during the weekend. Better to start the process Monday to Wednesday.

The Work Visa application process is quite involved. Luckily the School put me in touch with someone who clearly knows what they are talking about. He is going to help us with the following:

1- Submit fully completed Visa Application Form, either typed or neatly written in block letters.

2- Two (2) recent passport size photographs must be loosely attached (not stapled) to the application form. Photographs should be approx 3x4 cm in size and taken against a white or very light background.

3- A passport, which must be valid for at least six (6) months from the application date and the passport has got at least two pages free.

4- The authorisation letter issued by the Saudi Foreign Ministry. This should be arranged by the sponsor in Saudi Arabia.

5- Letter of sponsorship from the Saudi Company stamped by a Saudi Chamber of Commerce and Foreign Affairs, indicating the Visa Authorisation number, date of authorisation and Job title.

6- Original work contract, signed by both employer and employee and attested by Saudi  Chamber of Commerce and Saudi Ministry of foreign Affairs.

7- If during the past two years the applicant has worked in Saudi Arabia, a letter of no objection from the Company previously worked with must be attached.

8- Attested work experience letter from the competent authorities. The work experience should be attested by Chamber of Commerce, Notary Public and Internal affairs. The work experience should be attested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Saudi Consulate if the work experience gained outside NZ.

9- Original Medical Report Form attested by Medical council, Notary Public and Internal Affairs. A recent passport size photograph must be stapled to this form.

10- Recent police record, and must be authenticated by Notary Public, Internal Affairs and the Ministry of Foreign affairs.

11- Certified degree/ Diploma, should be attested by Notary Public, Internal Affairs, the Saudi cultural mission and general consulate of Saudi Arabia (If gained in New Zealand). If gained outside NZ, the qualification should be authenticated by the Saudi Consulate in the country of origin.

Phew! It is all going to be worth it.

The Multinational School - Riyadh

Considering how much time I usually spend at school, many will regard this as my new home. It has amazing facilities and Peter is going to have a ball (pardon the pun) teaching PE.

I looked at a number of International Schools before committing to MNS-R. This school really stood out as being a wonderful place of learning. It has Kiwi roots and the Directors are passionate about education - so it seems like a really good fit for me.
